Full Marks

Report Review Full marks - really fresh fish, cooked to perfection with perfect chips – The new owners Jo & Richard really care to ensure customer satisfaction. I qualified in Hotel Management, worked in 5 star European Hotels and been a Food & Beverage Manager of a 4 star hotel in Bournemouth and know quality when I taste it . What a pleasant surprised to find this quality so reasonably priced and local. Thank you Barnacles I will be back.

“HUGE FISH if you order the large”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 25 October 2015

I ordered the large cod and chips and WOW WAS IT LARGE, freshly cooked and delicious taste, chips were great too. Will definitely recommend this fish and chip shop. Don't order the large unless your VERY hungry.

“A great, traditional chippy”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 12 November 2015 via mobile

We were greeted straight away and our orders were taken by pen and paper from a friendly, older chap. He also explained that battered cod comes in S, M or L. The medium is quite big enough for the average person.

There were plenty seats whilst waiting for our food to be freshly cooked and the layout has an entry and exit door which seems practical.

A lovely lady called out to us when our food was ready. This place obviously prides itself on customer service.

Parking is available in the Co-op across the road.

Great fish and chips

Report Review I have been using this wonderful fish and chip shop for over 30 years and the quality has remained consistent over the years. The present owners Ahmed and Kath have brought the quality to a new high. It is spotlessly clean and serves the best fish and chips in bournemouth. I just wouldn't go anywhere else.

Paying the highest condiment

Report Review What can I say about this remarkable hidden treasure. Like the infamous beach parties Barnacles in Moordown is one of Bournemouths best kept secrets. With this kind of service and food this mouthwatering you'd normally expect to pay a lot more but here you get quantity AND quality. I can't think of anywhere else in the BH postcode I'd rather get my condiments.

“Fish and chips in Moredown”

I travel from Winton to get a big chips and two medium fish (£12.10) as that fulfils any hungry couple. Freshly cooked, good service with parking on the road or in the Co--op opposite.

“Lovely food”

Alan's Specials truly are the best in town! Although the wait can be a little long on Fry-days, it is a true reflection of the great quality food at reasonable prices. Would go everyday if I could, it really is special

Great menu and pleasant staff. Always cooks our fish orders fresh. Can be busy early evening so be prepared for a short wait but well worth the wait.

I just have to echo all the positive comments already left for this excellent Fish & Chip shop. Can be a bit tricky to park if it's busy so sometimes you have to sneak in to the Co-Op opposite, but there is also a handy cash point there

“Flawless chippie”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 25 May 2014

In my mind, best fish and chip shop in Winton and probably best in area.

Excellent fresh fish, good chunky chips and decent portions sizes. Plus fish batter was crispy and nothing was too greasy.

Delivered in a spotlessly clean shop with friendly staff.

I do recommend this place but expect a queue because its built up a good reputation and is popular.

“Fantastic Fish and Chips”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 22 February 2015

As a treat we have occasional fish and chips and have over the years tried most in the area. Barnacles recommended to us and this is without a doubt the best fish and chip supper we have had. The large fish is enough for two, well cooked to order and a friendly service. Worth travelling the extra distance for this quality.

“Have I found heaven?”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 11 January 2014

Fish and chips. They're British as can be. And Barnacles at 956 Wimborne Road are the best.

And when you've had good fish and chips, you can't entertain bad ones. Good fish and chips are memorable. They are adoreable. We tell our friends about them and we go back for more.

Wherever you travel in the world, ask the people you meet about British food and you'll always get the same answer. And yes, I do know that Indian food is the most popular takeaway, Chinese is in there somewhere too but they're not what we're famous for, is it?

Good Fish and Chips are great. I was recommended this place by a friend so I decided to give it ago. I was hungry.

Ahmed is the boss. Service is top notch and you are warmly welcomed by this softly spoken gentleman. Ahmed takes your order with a smile and it is cooked for you there and then. And you wait. And then you wait a little longer. Other peoples order are done whilst you're waiting and by the time your turn comes around, you're drooling. everybody is talking to each other, it's busy, people are happy. What a place.

There's not a lot on the menu. If you want a burger then go somewhere else. Barnacles doesn't advertise - it doesn't need to because it is very good at what it does. Fish and chips. The fish is superb - fresh and tasty. The batter is dry and crispy - simply the best i've had since I don't know when. And the chips are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They're got proper forks too!

Simply brilliant and tasty basics. I give you my personal guarantee that you will be delighted. Well done Ahmed and co.

Final point. You can park across the road in the co-op carpark whilst you eat. Their postcode is BH92DG. Map it.

“Best fish and chips in bournemouth”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 20 March 2015

Today I did a direct comparison between Barnicles and the award winning Malvern road fisheries. I ordered a small haddock with small chips and a pea fritter from both shops at lunch time on Friday. I shared them with a friend and we both came up with the same result. Malvern road fisheries gave us an enormous portion of chips most of which ended up in the bin as there was far too many to eat. Generous fish portion however batter was flaky. The pea fritter was colourless and tasted of nothing. The Barnicles chips were thick and chunky and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Again the fish portion was generous and the batter crisp and looked more appetising. The pea fritter was a deep green and tasted wonderful. So there you have it. So why then hasn't Barnacles won an award guess the judges didn't visit them. I have been going to Barnacles for the last 10years and have always had fantastic fish and chips. Also Barnacles were 20p cheaper. Don't get me wrong both chip pies were good only Barnacles were better.

Every week we have Fish 'n' Chip Friday and this is definitely the place to get them from.

The queues can be off putting but trust me it's worth it.

Great portion sizes and very tasty fish with just the right amount of non greasy batter. Chips are just right too.

It's only the mushy peas that seem a little overpriced but all in all SUPERB

Came across this gem of a chip shop by chance. Drove past one afternoon and the fantastic aroma enticed me in. It's a bit of a drive for us to get there but with so many disappointing chippies in town it is well worth the journey.

As fish and chip shops go, this one is excellent. It's particularly busy on weekends, but the staff are very friendly and cope really well and maintain a great level of customer service even when under pressure. The food is fresh, tasy and excellent value.
